Cement, concrete, and mortar will generally fail to bond or stick to smooth, non-porous, flexible, or heavily contaminated surfaces where mechanical suction and chemical absorption are impossible. Common materials that reject cement adhesion include plastic sheeting, glass, sheet metal, painted surfaces, finished wood, rubber, and heavily waxed or oiled stones. Furthermore, cement will not adhere properly to surfaces covered in dust, dirt, grease, or ice, as these layers act as physical barriers preventing the cement paste from making direct microscopic contact with the substrate, immediately causing the bond to fail under minimal stress.
