The most common problem with gas dryers is no heat or intermittent heat causing long drying times and clothes remaining damp, which accounts for over half of all gas dryer service calls. This is usually caused by restricted airflow that triggers safety shutdowns, followed by failure of gas heating components. First, a clogged vent system with lint buildup in the lint filter, lint housing, flexible duct behind the dryer, wall duct, or exterior flap causes d80, d90, d95 error codes and overheating that blows the thermal fuse, which cuts power to the gas valve. Second, weak gas valve solenoid coils are extremely common: these two or three small black coils on the gas valve open to release gas, but when weak they open initially then close after 5 to 10 minutes as they heat up, causing the dryer to heat briefly then go cold, so clothes need 2 to 3 cycles to dry. Third, failed igniter is common after 5 to 8 years: the silicon carbide igniter should glow bright orange to ignite gas, but when cracked it does not glow and there is no heat. Fourth, failed flame sensor prevents the gas valve from opening even if igniter glows. Fifth, mechanical wear like broken drum belts, worn idler pulleys, and drum rollers causes squealing or drum not turning. Regular annual vent cleaning and lint filter cleaning before every load prevents most gas dryer problems.
