The difference between Cat1 and Cat2 is size and capacity of tractor three-point hitch system standardized by ASABE. Category 1 is for small compact utility tractors 20 to 45 horsepower, such as John Deere 1025R and Kubota L2501, with lower link pins 7/8 inch diameter, top link pin 3/4 inch, spacing between lower arms about 26 inches, lift capacity up to 2000 pounds, used for light-duty 4 to 6 foot implements like rotary cutters and box blades for hobby farms. Category 2 is for larger utility tractors 40 to 100 horsepower like John Deere 5075E, with larger pins lower 1-1/8 inch, top 1 inch, spacing 32 inches, lift capacity 3000 to 5000 pounds, used for heavier 6 to 8 foot implements. Physically, Cat 2 hitch arms are thicker and stronger. Cat1 implements can be used on Cat2 tractor with bushings that sleeve smaller pins to fit larger holes, but Cat2 implements are too heavy for Cat1 tractor and would overload hydraulics and cause front end to lift dangerously. Cost difference, Cat2 implements are more expensive and heavier. Quick hitches also differ, Cat1 quick hitch like SpeeCo Cat1 and Cat2 quick hitch are different sizes. Horsepower and PTO power also differ, Cat2 tractors have more PTO horsepower to run heavy implements.
