The difference between a Category 1 and Category 2 top link tractor is in the size of the top link pin and the associated tractor horsepower and lift capacity. For Category 1, the top link pin diameter is 3/4 inch, and the top link itself is shorter and lighter, designed for tractors in the 20 to 50 horsepower range. For Category 2, the top link pin diameter is 1 inch, and the top link is longer, thicker, and stronger to handle higher draft forces from larger implements used on 50 to 90 horsepower tractors. The lower link pins also differ, 7/8 inch for Category 1 versus 1 1/8 inch for Category 2. The tractor's lift arm spacing is wider for Category 2 at about 32 inches versus 26 inches for Category 1. Practically, this means you cannot use a Category 1 top link on a Category 2 tractor without bushings and it may be too weak, and a Category 2 top link may not fit Category 1 implements. Quick hitches and top link brackets are category specific, and using the correct size ensures safe retention and proper geometry.
