A Category 1 implement is a tractor attachment designed to fit Category 1 three-point hitch on small to medium compact utility tractors with 20 to 45 horsepower, which is the most common size for hobby farms and landscaping. Category 1 implements have standardized pin sizes, lower pins 7/8 inch diameter, top link pin 3/4 inch diameter, and are built to work with hitch spacing about 26 inches between lower arms. They are lighter duty than Category 2 implements, typically weighing 200 to 800 pounds and 4 to 6 feet wide, with lift capacity up to 2000 pounds. Examples of Category 1 implements include 4 to 5 foot rotary cutters for mowing, box blades for leveling, rear blades, landscape rakes, 4 foot tillers, post hole diggers, and small plows. These implements are designed for sub-compact tractors like John Deere 1025R, 2025R, Kubota BX and L series. Category 1 implements are interchangeable between brands, any Cat 1 implement fits any Cat 1 tractor. They are distinguished from Cat 0 implements which are smaller for garden tractors, and Cat 2 implements which are heavier for 40 to 100 horsepower tractors. When buying, ensure implement is rated for your tractor's PTO horsepower and lift capacity, as using too heavy Cat 1 implement on limited Cat 1 tractor can cause front end lift and instability.
