The difference between Cat 0 and Cat 1 is size of three-point hitch for very small versus small tractors, with Cat 0 being smallest and Cat 1 being next size up and far more common today. Category 0 is for garden tractors and sub-compact tractors under 20 horsepower, with lower link pins 5/8 inch diameter, top link pin 1/2 inch, spacing between lower arms about 20 inches, lift capacity 500 to 1000 pounds, used for small 3 to 4 foot implements like garden tillers and small mowers. Category 1 is for compact utility tractors 20 to 45 horsepower, with lower pins 7/8 inch, top pin 3/4 inch, spacing 26 inches, lift capacity up to 2000 pounds, used for 4 to 6 foot implements like rotary cutters and box blades. Cat 0 tractors are typically lawn and garden tractors like older John Deere garden tractors, while Cat 1 includes popular models like John Deere 1025R and Kubota BX. Cat 1 implements are much more widely available today, many manufacturers no longer make Cat 0 implements, and many modern sub-compacts use limited Cat 1 that can handle Cat 0 implements with bushings. Cat 1 hitch is stronger and can lift heavier loads. If you have Cat 0 tractor, you are limited to very light implements, while Cat 1 offers much wider selection for small acreage work.
