An example of containment depends on the field, as the term is used in politics, medicine, engineering, and everyday life. In Cold War history, the classic example of containment was the US policy to prevent the spread of communism, such as the Truman Doctrine in 1947 where the US provided military and economic aid to Greece and Turkey to stop Soviet influence, the Marshall Plan that rebuilt Western Europe to make it resistant to communism, and US involvement in the Korean War to contain North Korean communist expansion. In public health, an example of containment is the cordon sanitaire used during Ebola outbreaks, where officials sealed off affected neighborhoods in Liberia and Sierra Leone, or the quarantine zones in Atlanta depicted in the TV series Containment, or COVID-19 lockdowns that contained virus spread by restricting movement. In engineering, an example is the containment building around a nuclear reactor, a thick concrete and steel dome designed to contain radiation if there is an accident, like at Chernobyl and modern reactors. In environmental science, containment includes building barriers around oil spills to contain the oil. In laboratory safety, biosafety cabinets contain dangerous pathogens. In everyday life, containment could be as simple as putting a lid on a pot to contain steam or using a fence to contain livestock. All examples share the idea of creating a barrier to stop something from spreading beyond a defined area.
