What insurance allows you to drive other people's cars in Australia is not your own insurance, but the insurance on the car you are driving, because car insurance follows the car. If you drive your friend's car, you are allowed to drive it under their comprehensive or third party property insurance if their policy allows unlisted drivers, which most standard policies from NRMA, Allianz, AAMI, QBE and Suncorp do. Their policy allows any licensed driver with permission, though extra excess applies if you are under 25 or unlisted. So their insurance allows you to drive. Your own comprehensive insurance on your own car may include a limited extension for driving an uninsured third party vehicle, which allows you to drive someone else's car that has no optional insurance and gives you up to $5,000 to $10,000 third party property cover for damage you cause to other people's cars, but it does not cover damage to the car you are driving. This is not full cover. In the UK, some fully comprehensive policies include Driving Other Cars extension that allows you to drive any other car third party only with owner's permission, provided other car is separately insured, but this extension has been reduced since 2020 and often excludes under 25s. In Australia, there is no broad DOC extension that gives you comprehensive cover in any car. To be able to drive other people's cars with full protection, you need to be added as a listed driver to their policy, or ensure their policy allows unlisted drivers and has comprehensive cover. Always check policy schedule before driving.
