Am I insured if I drive someone else's car in Australia depends on that car's insurance, not your own. Because car insurance follows the car, you are covered by whatever insurance the owner has on that car, provided you have their permission and are licensed. If the owner has comprehensive insurance that allows any licensed driver or lists you as a driver, you are insured for damage to their car and damage you cause to other people's cars and property up to $20M under their policy. If the owner has Third Party Property Damage only, you are insured for damage you cause to other people's cars but not for damage to their car. If the owner has no optional insurance, only Compulsory Third Party which covers personal injury, you are not insured for any property damage and could be personally liable for tens of thousands if you hit a luxury car or building. Your own comprehensive insurance on your own car does not give you comprehensive cover in someone else's car, though some policies include a small extension of $5,000 to $10,000 third party property cover for driving an uninsured third party vehicle with permission, but this does not cover damage to the car you are driving. So to be insured in someone else's car, check their policy schedule for permitted drivers and excess, ensure you are licensed, sober, have permission, and consider being added as listed driver if you drive regularly. In UK rules are stricter, you must be named driver or have Driving Other Cars extension.
