Does your insurance cover you when you drive other cars in Australia, generally no, not comprehensively. Australian car insurance follows the car, not the driver, so your comprehensive insurance on your own car covers your own car regardless of who drives it with permission, but it does not automatically give you comprehensive cover to drive someone else's car. When you drive someone else's car, you are covered by their insurance on that car, not yours. If their car has comprehensive that allows unlisted drivers, you are covered for damage to their car and to others under their policy. If their car has no optional insurance, only Compulsory Third Party, there is no property damage cover. Some Australian comprehensive policies do include a limited extension for driving an uninsured third party vehicle, which provides up to $5,000 to $10,000 third party property damage cover for damage you cause to other people's cars while driving an uninsured car with permission, but it does not cover damage to the car you are driving itself. This extension is included by insurers like Allianz, QBE and NRMA but with strict limits. So your own insurance does not cover you fully in other cars. In contrast, in the UK many fully comprehensive policies include Driving Other Cars third party only extension, but this has been reduced since 2020. Best practice in Australia is to check the insurance of the car you are about to drive, ensure it allows unlisted drivers, and consider being added as listed driver if you drive regularly.
