In electronics, physics, and materials engineering, "solid state" refers to electronic devices, circuits, or systems that rely entirely on the control of electrical currents and electric fields within solid semiconductor materials, crystals, or rigid structures. Unlike older technologies that depended on thermionic emission inside fragile, gas-filled vacuum tubes or liquid chemical electrolytes, solid-state components have no moving parts and conduct electrons entirely within solid media.
