BPD masking refers to hiding or suppressing intense emotions, impulsivity, or fear of abandonment associated with borderline personality disorder to appear okay to others, and it is a coping strategy described in lived-experience communities rather than a formal diagnostic term. It may look like always appearing cheerful, easygoing, or agreeable on the outside while internally feeling overwhelmed, empty, or in crisis. Common examples include forcing a smile and saying I'm fine when feeling intense shame or anger, rehearsing what to say to avoid rejection, people-pleasing excessively and agreeing to things to keep relationships, suppressing anger until it turns into self-criticism or self-harm urges, withdrawing silently instead of asking for help, and over-apologizing or over-explaining to prevent perceived abandonment. Some people may appear high-achieving and in control at work or school but crash and experience intense mood swings alone. Masking can be exhausting and may delay support because others do not see the distress. If masking leads to emotional exhaustion, self-harm thoughts, or relationship difficulties, talking with a therapist familiar with emotion dysregulation, DBT-informed care, or a trusted mental health professional can help explore healthier coping and support strategies.
