Neurodivergent masking, sometimes called camouflaging, refers to strategies neurodivergent people may use to hide or suppress natural traits to appear neurotypical or to avoid stigma, and it can occur across autism, ADHD, and other differences. Common ways people describe masking include consciously rehearsing what to say before social interactions, scripting small talk, forcing eye contact even when it feels uncomfortable, suppressing stimming or fidgeting like rocking, hand movements, or leg bouncing, mimicking others' facial expressions, tone of voice, or slang, hiding sensory discomfort in noisy or bright environments without asking for accommodations, over-preparing for changes in routine, people-pleasing and agreeing to avoid conflict, and studying social rules intellectually as if learning a foreign language. Some people also mask by hiding intense interests or downplaying need for alone time. While masking can help navigate school or work short term, it often requires constant monitoring and can lead to exhaustion, anxiety, loss of sense of self, and burnout. If masking is draining, it can help to explore safe spaces to unmask, set boundaries, and talk with a therapist or counselor who understands neurodivergence and can support authentic coping strategies.
