What does 5 clicks mean?

Five clicks can mean many different things depending on context, so the meaning changes with the situation. In technology and user experience, 5 clicks refers to the number of times a user has to click a mouse or tap to achieve a goal, and the 5-click rule is an informal usability principle that says users should be able to find what they want within five clicks or they will leave the website. In advertising, 5 clicks means five separate users or interactions have clicked on a link or ad. In film and TV, 5 clicks could refer to five presses of a remote, referencing the movie Click where Adam Sandler's character fast-forwards. In military or hiking jargon, a klick is slang for kilometer, so 5 clicks means 5 kilometers. In photography, 5 clicks might mean five shutter clicks or five stops of adjustment. In social media, 5 clicks could be shorthand for saying something is five clicks away. In everyday conversation, someone might say it was 5 clicks away to mean it was close or took little effort. Without context, the most common interpretation in digital culture is the usability rule about website navigation requiring five mouse clicks.
