In the United States under the MPA rating system, PG-13 movies are generally not allowed to show explicit nipple nudity in a sexual context, and the rules are quite strict about it. The PG-13 rating allows for brief, non-sexual, non-graphic nudity in some cases, such as a glimpse from a distance or a non-sexual context like breastfeeding or a National Geographic style documentary, but visible erect or sexualized female nipples will usually push a film to an R rating. Male nipples are almost always allowed in PG-13, as seen in many shirtless scenes. Female nipple exposure that is brief, obscured by lighting or sheer fabric, or shown in a non-sexual medical context might be permitted at the very edge of PG-13 at the discretion of the ratings board, but it is rare. Most studios avoid the risk and will cover nipples with pasties, bras, shadows, or carefully placed hair to stay within PG-13. If nudity is sexualized, graphic, prolonged, or focused on, the film will be rated R. So while fleeting, non-sexual female nipple exposure has occasionally slipped into PG-13 films internationally, in the US it is generally not allowed if it is clear and sexualized, and male nipple nudity is acceptable.
