Signs of a clogged dishwasher filter include poor cleaning, standing water, and odors. The most obvious sign is dishes not coming out clean with food particles stuck on dishes after full cycle, as clogged filter prevents water from circulating through spray arms and traps debris that redeposits on dishes. Second, standing water in bottom of dishwasher after cycle that does not drain, often accompanied by gurgling noises and error codes like F9E1 or OE, because filter blocks water from reaching drain pump. Third, foul or musty odor coming from dishwasher due to trapped food decomposing in filter and sump. Fourth, spray arms not spinning or weak water pressure, as filter clog reduces water flow to spray arms. Fifth, longer cycle times as dishwasher repeatedly tries to drain and wash. Sixth, grinding or humming noises from drain pump area during drain attempt, indicating pump struggling to push water through clog. Seventh, visible debris like food chunks, grease, and glass when you remove lower rack and inspect filter at bottom. To check, remove lower rack, locate cylindrical filter at bottom, twist counterclockwise to remove, rinse under running water, and scrub with old toothbrush. Clean filter weekly by rinsing under water to prevent clogs that cause poor cleaning and drain failures.
