You should not run your dishwasher without the filter for normal dishwashing cycles, but you can run a short cleaning cycle without filter to flush drain sump if necessary, with caution. The filter in your dishwasher traps food particles, debris, and small objects to prevent them from clogging drain pump, spray arms, and drain hose. If you run dishwasher without filter during regular load with dirty dishes, food particles will flow directly into drain pump and can clog impeller, damage pump, and cause expensive failure costing 100 to 200 dollars. However, for deep cleaning the sump area, you can remove filter, clean it separately by rinsing under water and scrubbing with toothbrush, then clean sump area underneath filter with paper towel and old toothbrush to remove trapped food and grease, then reinstall filter before running cleaning cycle with Affresh or vinegar. Some technicians recommend running one empty hot cycle without filter after manually cleaning sump to flush out loosened debris, but immediately reinstall filter afterward. Never run dishwasher with dishes and without filter. If your model has self-cleaning filter that is not removable, you do not need to run without filter. Always check manual, as running without filter may void warranty. Best practice is to clean filter weekly by removing and rinsing, and run monthly cleaning cycle with filter installed.
