While you can do a partial cleaning of dishwasher filter without removing it, a thorough cleaning requires removal for best results. For a quick clean without removal, you can run a hot cleaning cycle that dissolves some grease and residue: empty dishwasher, place 2 cups of white vinegar in a bowl on top rack, sprinkle 1 cup baking soda on bottom, and run hottest heavy cycle with no detergent, the hot water and vinegar dissolve grease on filter surface. You can also use a dishwasher cleaner tablet like Affresh or Finish Machine Cleaner that dissolves buildup. For manual cleaning without full removal, open door, remove lower rack, use old toothbrush to scrub top of filter visible at bottom to remove food particles. However, to truly clean filter and prevent odor, poor cleaning, and drain clogs, you must remove it: for Whirlpool models, remove lower rack, twist cylindrical filter assembly counterclockwise a quarter turn, lift out upper and lower filter, rinse both under running water, scrub with soft brush to remove trapped food, check sump area underneath for debris, and reinstall by twisting clockwise until locked. Manufacturers recommend cleaning filter every 30 days if you do not scrape dishes well, or every 60 days if you scrape well. Cleaning without removal leaves trapped food in sump that causes odor and poor wash performance and can damage pump.
