To unclog your Whirlpool dishwasher that is not draining, leaving food on dishes, or showing water standing in bottom, follow these steps. First, unplug dishwasher or turn off breaker for safety. Second, clean filter: open door, remove lower rack, locate cylindrical filter at bottom under spray arm, twist counterclockwise a quarter turn, lift out upper and lower filter, rinse under running water, scrub with soft brush, check sump underneath for food debris and remove with paper towel, reinstall by twisting clockwise. Third, clean spray arms: remove lower spray arm by twisting cap or lifting, remove upper spray arm, rinse under water, use toothpick to clear holes clogged with food and mineral scale. Fourth, check drain hose: locate drain hose under sink that connects to garbage disposal or air gap, disconnect and check for clog, run water through it. Fifth, clean air gap: if you have air gap cap on sink, remove cap and clean inside. Sixth, check garbage disposal: if dishwasher drains into disposal, run disposal to clear clog. Seventh, run hot cleaning cycle: after reassembling, place 2 cups vinegar in bowl on top rack, sprinkle baking soda on bottom, run hottest heavy cycle empty. Eighth, check drain pump: if still clogged, drain pump at bottom may have food trapped, requires removing bottom panel. Regular filter cleaning monthly prevents 80 percent of clogs.
