Applying caulk between the bottom edge of quarter round molding and the floor is generally discouraged by professional finish carpenters and flooring installers. Because hardwood, laminate, and luxury vinyl floors naturally expand and contract with seasonal shifts in humidity and temperature, caulking the quarter round directly to the floor restricts this movement, which can lead to unsightly cracking along the caulk line or buckling of the flooring materials. Furthermore, floors collect dirt and moisture; leaving the bottom uncaulked allows the wood to breathe. Caulk should instead be applied only along the top edge where the quarter round meets the baseboard to create a clean, seamless visual transition.
