Whether quarter round looks cheap depends heavily on the quality of the installation, the materials chosen, and how well it is finished and painted. When quarter rounds are carelessly installed with visible gaps at the mitered corners, large unpainted nail holes, or sloppy globs of caulk, they can indeed detract from a room's aesthetic and appear low-quality. However, when professionally installed, expertly mitered, properly coped at inside corners, and neatly painted or stained to match the existing baseboards, quarter round looks clean, elegant, and intentional. Many interior designers and traditional builders actually prefer shoe molding over standard quarter round because its narrower, taller profile offers a more refined and high-end architectural transition.
