Quarter round molding should always be nailed exclusively into the vertical baseboard rather than down into the horizontal flooring surface. The primary engineering reason for this installation technique is to accommodate the natural floating movement of modern floors; nailing quarter round directly into the subfloor or finished flooring pins the floor down and restricts its expansion and contraction, resulting in buckling, warping, or squeaking. By driving finish nails or brads horizontally through the quarter round and straight into the face of the baseboard, the trim holds securely while allowing the floor underneath to shift freely.
