Installing quarter round directly over tile flooring is generally discouraged by professional interior designers and finish carpenters. Because ceramic and porcelain tile is rigid and extremely hard, nailing quarter round directly into a tiled surface risks cracking the tile or failing to secure the nails properly. Instead, quarter round or shoe molding should be installed against the baseboard and allowed to float just above the tile surface, or fastened exclusively into the vertical baseboard wall rather than down into the horizontal tile flooring, allowing room for expansion.
