To hard reset garage door keypad that is not working or you want to erase all PINs and start fresh, you need to perform factory reset that clears memory and restores default settings, though steps vary by brand and model. For most LiftMaster and Chamberlain keypads like 877MAX, hard reset is done by removing battery, pressing and holding Program or Learn button on keypad for 10 seconds to discharge power, then reinserting battery, or by pressing and holding Enter and Program buttons together for 5 seconds until light blinks, indicating memory cleared. For Clicker universal keypad, hard reset is done by pressing and holding Program button and 6 and Up Down buttons together until LED goes out, erasing all codes. For Genie keypads, hard reset is done by pressing Program button and Up Down buttons together. After hard reset, keypad memory is erased and old PIN no longer works, so you need to reprogram keypad to opener by pressing Learn button on garage door opener motor unit hanging from ceiling and entering new 4-digit PIN on keypad and pressing Enter or Send within 30 seconds until opener light blinks indicating learned. If keypad has dip switches, set them according to opener brand before reprogramming. Hard reset also erases any custom settings, so you start fresh. Test new PIN after reset by entering PIN and pressing Enter to open door several times. If keypad still fails after hard reset and new battery, keypad may be damaged and needs replacement costing 30 to 60 dollars.
