A garage door keypad can be hardwired in some installations, though most modern keypads are wireless battery powered for easy installation, and hardwired option depends on opener model and keypad type. Older garage door openers had wired keypads that were hardwired to opener via low-voltage bell wire running from keypad outside garage to opener motor unit, similar to wall button wiring, and these keypads did not need battery as they were powered by opener transformer, providing reliable connection without battery replacement. However, most keypads sold today, such as LiftMaster 877MAX, Chamberlain KLIK2U, and Genie wireless keypads, are wireless and battery powered, using rolling code radio frequency to communicate with opener, requiring no wiring and easy to install by mounting outside garage with screws and programming via Learn button. Wireless keypads use battery that lasts 1 to 3 years and need periodic replacement. Some commercial or high-security installations may still use hardwired keypads that are connected to access control system. You can convert wireless keypad to hardwired by running low-voltage wire, but it is not recommended as wireless is designed for battery and opener may not support wired keypad input. If you prefer hardwired for reliability and no battery, look for wired keypad model compatible with your opener, or use wall console inside garage that is hardwired. Hardwired keypads avoid battery failure but require running wire through wall, which is more difficult installation costing extra labor.
