How long will Medicare let you stay in hospital? Medicare coverage for hospital stays under Part A allows up to 90 days per benefit period plus 60 lifetime reserve days for inpatient hospital care, with each benefit period starting after you have been out of hospital or skilled nursing for 60 days. First 60 days have deductible and no coinsurance, days 61 to 90 have daily coinsurance, and reserve days have higher coinsurance. If you need longer than 90 days in one benefit period, you can use lifetime reserve days, total 60 reserve days that can be used only once in lifetime. After reserve days exhausted, Medicare covers no more inpatient days in that benefit period, and you pay all costs unless new benefit period starts after 60 days out. For psychiatric hospitals, there is 190-day lifetime limit. Medicare also covers inpatient rehab under similar rules. So Medicare lets you stay up to 90 days plus 60 reserve days per benefit period, with cost sharing after 60 days.
