You can tell if your washing machine agitator is broken by performing a simple manual rotation test on the upper section of a dual-action model. Grab the top fins and attempt to turn them; in a healthy agitator, they should ratchet and lock in one direction while spinning freely in the other. If the top cap spins effortlessly in both directions with no resistance or clicking, the internal plastic drive dogs are broken. Additionally, if the motor hums during the wash cycle but clothes remain motionless, the agitator assembly has failed.
