Using a washing machine with a broken agitator is technically possible, but your clothes will not get clean. If the agitator is merely stripped at the top, the lower base might still move slightly, but garments will not circulate or scrub against each other. If the agitator is completely detached or loose on the drive shaft, running the machine can cause permanent damage to the transmission splines and inner wash basket. It is always best to repair or replace the broken agitator component before running another laundry load.

Running a traditional top-load washing machine with a broken or detached agitator is strongly discouraged, as the exposed metal transmission shaft splines can easily shred delicate clothing items, leak water into the lower cabinet, and permanently strip the internal drive teeth. If the agitator is merely loose due to a stripped top cap or loose mounting bolt, you should tighten or replace those specific plastic parts before running another load to prevent severe drivetrain damage.
