Running a traditional top-load washing machine without the central agitator post is technically possible from a mechanical standpoint, but it is strongly discouraged for several important reasons. The agitator is specifically engineered to circulate clothes through the water, rub fabrics against each other to remove embedded dirt, and maintain balanced weight distribution during operation. If you remove the agitator, your clothes will simply float or pool lazily at the bottom of the drum without receiving proper mechanical cleaning friction, resulting in poorly washed laundry. Furthermore, in many top-load models, the agitator bolt and cap help secure the inner wash basket to the drive shaft; running the machine without these components can cause severe mechanical damage, loose basket wobble, and permanent wear on internal transmission splines during high-speed spin cycles.
