Continuing to use a washing machine with a broken agitator is not recommended because the appliance will fail to perform its primary cleaning function. Without a functional agitator to churn and circulate garments through the soapy water, clothes will simply sit at the bottom of the tub without receiving any mechanical friction, leaving stains and body oils unremoved. Additionally, operating a machine with a loose or damaged agitator assembly can cause metal-on-metal grinding, stripping the central drive shaft and resulting in expensive transmission repairs.

Operating a washing machine with a broken agitator will severely compromise cleaning performance and risk damaging your laundry. Without a functioning agitator or impeller to circulate clothes through the water and detergent, garments will simply float passively in the tub without rubbing against each other to remove dirt. Furthermore, a loose or damaged agitator post can scratch fabric or expose internal metal components that tear delicate clothes and ruin your laundry load.
