Under National Electrical Code (NEC Table 300.5) standards, the required burial depth for residential underground power lines depends on the wiring method and location. For instance, a direct-burial cable without protective raceway must be buried at least 24 inches deep in normal soil. However, if the electrical conductors are enclosed inside an approved protective conduit (such as Schedule 40 PVC), the required minimum cover depth is reduced to 18 inches under lawns and residential driveways. Special shallow installations or concrete encasements may permit 6 to 12 inches under strict engineering codes.
