Can you put a smart lock on any door, not every door, as smart locks have requirements for door type, thickness, backset, and condition. Most smart locks like Kwikset, Schlage, Yale, August, and Eufy are designed for standard US residential doors that are 1 3/8 to 2 inches thick, have standard bore hole 2 1/8 inches diameter, and backset 2 3/8 or 2 3/4 inches, which fits most entry doors. Doors that may not work include very thin interior doors, metal security doors with unusual holes, sliding doors which need special sliding door smart locks, double doors with astragal, and doors with mortise locks rather than cylindrical deadbolt. Also doors that are warped, not aligned, or have frame issues will cause smart lock to fail because deadbolt must extend smoothly. Glass doors with no solid wood may not support lock. Some apartment doors prohibit smart lock installation due to lease. For non standard doors, you may need adapter kit or professional installation to drill new holes. Battery powered smart locks also need clearance inside. Before buying, measure door thickness, backset, and bore hole, check lock specifications, and ensure door is square and latches smoothly. Most exterior entry doors are compatible, but not all doors qualify.
