Can your smart lock be hacked, yes, like any connected device it has potential vulnerabilities, but risk is relatively low when properly installed and maintained compared to traditional lock picking. Smart locks can be hacked through several vectors, WiFi interception if weak password or outdated encryption, Bluetooth sniffing if close proximity, app account takeover via phishing or reused password, and firmware exploits if manufacturer does not patch. However, reputable brands like Schlage, Yale, August, Kwikset, and Ultraloq use AES 128 or 256 encryption, secure Bluetooth Low Energy, and two factor authentication to make hacking difficult. Most burglars do not hack smart locks, they use physical force or enter through unlocked doors or windows because hacking requires technical skill and time. To reduce risk, use strong unique WiFi password with WPA3, enable two factor authentication in lock app, keep firmware updated, disable remote access if not needed, use strong PIN codes not 1234, and choose locks with BHMA Grade 1 or 2 rating. Physical security still matters, a strong door and frame matters more than digital. So yes it can be hacked in theory, but with good hygiene risk is low and convenience benefits outweigh for most homeowners when best practices followed.
