Standard Ground Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) outlets will generally not function correctly or provide adequate shock protection if they are installed with reversed polarity. If line and load terminals or hot and neutral wires are swapped during installation, the internal sensing circuitry of the GFCI cannot properly monitor current imbalances between the hot and neutral conductors. Consequently, the GFCI may either fail to trip during a dangerous ground fault or refuse to reset entirely until the wiring polarity is corrected by a professional.
