A standard Brita water filter pitcher with activated carbon filter will reduce some microplastics but is not certified to remove all microplastics completely, though it does improve water quality. Brita filters use activated carbon and ion exchange resin designed to reduce chlorine, taste, odor, lead, and some particulates, and independent tests show that carbon block filters can capture some larger microplastic particles above about 10 microns through physical filtration, but very small nanoplastics may pass through because standard Brita pitcher filter pore size is relatively large compared to specialized microfiltration. Brita's newer Brita Longlast and Elite filters claim to reduce more particulates, and some third-party tests found they reduced microplastic counts by around 50 to 80 percent depending on particle size, but not 100 percent. For more effective microplastic removal, you need filters with smaller micron ratings, such as reverse osmosis systems, 0.5 micron carbon block filters, or filters certified to NSF/ANSI 42 and 53 for particulate reduction. So Brita will help reduce some microplastics and is better than unfiltered tap water, but if microplastic removal is primary goal, consider reverse osmosis or certified 0.5 micron filter. Always replace Brita filters as recommended for effectiveness.
