Ziploc bags can put microplastics in your food under certain conditions, especially when exposed to heat, though the amount is generally low for typical cold storage use. Ziploc bags are made from polyethylene plastic, and studies show that plastic bags and containers can shed tiny microplastic particles and nanoplastics when they are heated, microwaved, scratched, or reused many times, with hot foods causing more shedding than cold foods. Research on plastic food storage found that heating food in plastic bags or pouring hot liquids into them increases microplastic release significantly, and even washing plastic containers in dishwasher can increase shedding due to abrasion. For cold storage like sandwiches, fruits, and leftovers at room temperature or in fridge, microplastic shedding is much lower but not zero, as friction and age of bag still cause small particle release. To reduce exposure, avoid microwaving food in Ziploc bags, avoid putting very hot foods directly into them, let food cool first, use bags once or few times rather than many times when scratched, and consider using glass or stainless steel containers for hot foods. Standard Ziploc storage for cold foods is considered low risk but not completely microplastic-free.
