You should not squish fleas with bare fingers for several reasons related to hygiene, effectiveness, and disease risk, though squishing does kill individual flea. First, fleas have hard exoskeletons and are small and fast, making them difficult to squish effectively between fingers, they can jump away quickly, and even if you catch one, their exoskeleton is resilient so they may not die from simple pressing. Second, squishing engorged fleas that have recently fed on blood can release blood and potentially pathogens, staining skin, clothing, and surfaces with blood spots, and while fleas can carry bacteria like Bartonella and tapeworm larvae, disease transmission from squishing is low but washing hands after handling is important. Third, squishing one flea does not solve infestation because fleas have life cycle with eggs, larvae, and pupae hidden in carpets, pet bedding, and cracks, with pupae able to remain dormant for months, so killing one adult does little to control population. Fourth, squishing with bare hands can spread flea eggs if you crush near eggs. Better methods to kill fleas include using flea comb and dipping comb in bowl of soapy water which drowns fleas within seconds as soap breaks surface tension, washing pet bedding and your bedding in hot water and drying on high heat which kills all stages, vacuuming thoroughly and disposing bag outside, and treating pets with veterinarian approved flea preventative that kills quickly.
