Yes, fleas can live in your bed, especially if you have pets that sleep on bed or if pet bedding is nearby, because fleas and their eggs, larvae, and pupae thrive in warm, soft, undisturbed areas like mattresses, blankets, sheets, and pillows where organic debris and pet dander accumulate. While adult fleas live primarily on pets like dogs and cats feeding on blood, they lay eggs that fall off pets onto bedding, carpets, and furniture, and those eggs hatch into larvae that hide in mattress seams, bedding folds, and carpet fibers feeding on organic matter and flea feces, then form pupae in cocoons that can remain dormant for months waiting for vibrations and warmth to emerge as adults that jump onto hosts. If you allow pets on bed, fleas can easily infest bed. Signs fleas are living in your bed include finding small dark insects jumping on sheets, flea feces that look like black pepper or dark specks that turn reddish brown when wet, and bites on ankles and legs, though fleas can bite any exposed skin. Fleas do not live on humans long term but will feed on humans in bed. To prevent fleas living in bed, treat pets with veterinary flea preventative, wash bedding and pet bedding weekly in hot water above 140 degrees and dry on high heat for 30 minutes, vacuum mattress and bed frame regularly, and use mattress encasements.
