Fleas absolutely hate several strong, pungent scents that irritate them and interfere with host finding, though no scent alone eliminates infestation without treating pets and home. Smells fleas hate most include cedarwood oil and cedar chips, which are natural repellents and commonly used in pet bedding, lavender oil, peppermint oil, eucalyptus oil, tea tree oil, lemongrass oil, rosemary, and citronella, which have repellent properties, though essential oils must be used carefully around pets especially cats as concentrated oils can be toxic to them. They hate citrus smells like lemon and orange peel, which contain limonene that repels fleas. They hate the smell of vinegar, particularly apple cider vinegar, which is sometimes used as rinse for pets though evidence is limited. Fleas also hate desiccant dusts like food grade diatomaceous earth and CimeXa which have no smell but kill by dehydrating exoskeleton. They hate clean, dry environments because larvae need humidity and organic debris. While these smells may repel fleas to some extent and can be used in sachets, sprays diluted properly, and in pet bedding, fleas will tolerate unpleasant smells if hungry and host is present, so scent repellents are supplemental. Effective control requires treating pets with veterinary flea preventative, washing bedding on high heat, vacuuming thoroughly, and using insect growth regulators that prevent development, not just smells.
