Old houses have attics for several practical and architectural reasons. Structurally, steep pitched roofs common in old houses created large triangular space under roof that was naturally enclosed as attic, providing insulation buffer that helped keep house warm in winter and cooler in summer by trapping air. Attics provided essential storage space for families before modern closets and garages, used for storing seasonal clothing, canned goods, furniture, and heirlooms. In many old houses, attic also served as sleeping quarters for children, servants, or guests, known as garret, especially in times when families were larger and needed extra bedrooms. Attics also housed water tanks, allowed access for roof maintenance, and provided ventilation that prevented moisture buildup in roof structure, extending roof life. In pre-air conditioning era, attic helped with air circulation, with attic windows or vents allowing hot air to escape. So old houses have attics due to roof design, storage needs, insulation, extra living space, and building practices of time.
