By attic, I mean the space located directly under roof of house or building, between top floor ceiling and roof structure, typically used for storage or sometimes converted into living space. Attic is uppermost area of building, often with sloped ceilings following roof pitch, containing rafters, trusses, joists, insulation, and ventilation components. Attics can be unfinished, used for storing boxes and seasonal items, accessed by hatch or pull-down ladder, or finished, converted into bedroom, office, or bonus room with flooring, walls, and heating. Attics vary in height, some are walk-in with enough headroom to stand, others are crawl spaces requiring crawling. Functionally, attic provides storage, helps with building insulation, and houses utilities like HVAC ducts. So attic means upper storage or living space under roof, ranging from simple empty space to fully finished room.
