In medical terms, attic refers to epitympanic recess, also called attic of middle ear, which is upper part of tympanic cavity above the eardrum and malleus, part of middle ear anatomy. Medical attic, or epitympanum, is small space in temporal bone that houses head of malleus and body of incus, two of three ossicles, and is important in hearing and ear disease. Attic in medical terms is relevant for ear infections, cholesteatoma, and otitis media, as infections can spread to attic region. For example, attic retraction or attic cholesteatoma refers to skin cyst growing in attic of middle ear, which can cause hearing loss and requires surgery. ENT doctors examine attic during otoscopy for abnormalities. Term attic comes from its location as upper storage-like space of middle ear, similar to house attic being top space. So medical attic is not related to house attic storage but to anatomy of ear, specifically upper compartment of middle ear above eardrum, containing ossicles and connecting to mastoid air cells. Understanding medical attic is important for diagnosing ear diseases, as attic is common site for chronic ear disease and cholesteatoma formation, requiring careful evaluation by ENT specialist using microscope and imaging like CT scan to assess attic involvement and plan treatment to preserve hearing.
