You should not store in an attic items that are sensitive to extreme heat, cold, humidity, or pests, because attics experience large temperature fluctuations often reaching over 130 degrees in summer and freezing in winter, and can have moisture and pest issues. Items you should not store in attic include photographs, important documents, and books which can warp, fade, and develop mold, electronics and appliances which can be damaged by heat and dust, candles and wax items which melt, vinyl records and CDs which warp, leather goods, clothing made of delicate fabrics which can develop mildew and be eaten by moths, food and wine which spoil, paint and chemicals which can become hazardous in heat, wooden furniture which can crack, musical instruments, and medications. Also avoid storing flammable materials and propane tanks due to fire hazard. Instead store only durable, non-perishable items like holiday decorations in sealed plastic bins, and ensure attic is ventilated and free of leaks and pests before storing anything.
