Pass and Seymour is owned by Legrand, which is a large French multinational electrical infrastructure company headquartered in Limoges, France. Pass and Seymour was originally founded in 1890 in Syracuse, New York, by James Pass and George Seymour as an independent American electrical manufacturing company that became well known for inventing early wiring devices such as switches and outlets. In 1983, Legrand acquired Pass and Seymour to expand its presence in the North American market. Today, Pass and Seymour operates as a division and primary wiring device brand of Legrand in North America under the name Pass and Seymour by Legrand or Legrand Pass and Seymour, with its headquarters still in Syracuse, New York. Legrand itself was founded in 1865 in Limoges, France, is publicly traded on the Euronext Paris stock exchange, employs over 38,000 people worldwide, and is one of the world's largest makers of electrical and digital building products including wiring devices, lighting controls under Wattstopper, and data infrastructure. So while Pass and Seymour retains its historic American name and engineering in Syracuse, its corporate owner is the French company Legrand, similar to how Square D is owned by Schneider Electric and is no longer independent.
