After eating poison, mice do not have a single predictable place they go, and their behavior depends on the type of poison, the dose, and where they are when symptoms start. Most modern rodenticide poisons are anticoagulants or cholecalciferol based and do not kill instantly, they take 24 hours to several days to cause internal bleeding, dehydration, or calcium overdose. During that time, mice often become thirsty, lethargic, and seek water and a quiet, hidden, sheltered place to rest, which is frequently inside walls, under insulation in attics, behind appliances, inside furniture, or in burrows. This is why poisoned mice often die in inaccessible places and cause a strong decomposition odor for days or weeks, as well as staining and potential secondary poisoning risks to pets that find the carcass. Contrary to myths, there is no poison that makes mice leave the house to die outside or that makes them seek water outside. Some may die near water sources, but most die close to their nesting area inside the structure. Because of these problems, many pest control professionals prefer snap traps and exclusion over poison for indoor infestations, as traps allow you to remove the carcass and confirm elimination without hidden dead mice.
