House mice usually live very short lives, and their lifespan depends heavily on whether they live in the wild, inside a human home, or as a protected pet. In the wild outdoors, house mice face predators like cats, owls, hawks, snakes, as well as starvation, disease, harsh weather, and human control measures, so their average lifespan is only about five to twelve months, with many not surviving more than a few months. Inside a human home, where they have warmth, shelter, and access to food, they can live slightly longer, often twelve to eighteen months, because they are safer than outdoors but still face traps and poisons. As pet fancy mice kept in clean cages with regular food, water, veterinary care, and no predators, they live much longer, typically one and a half to three years, with two years being average. Some well-cared-for pet mice reach three and a half years, but that is uncommon. Laboratory mice have similar lifespans to pet mice. Factors that influence lifespan include genetics, diet quality, stress, housing conditions, and disease. Females may live slightly longer than males in captivity. So while a house mouse infestation may seem persistent, individual mice are short-lived, but they breed so quickly that the population constantly replaces itself.
