Foods that are poisonous to mice fall into two categories, foods that are toxic to pet mice that should never be fed, and rodenticide poisons used for pest control against wild mice. For pet fancy mice, several human foods are poisonous, including chocolate which contains theobromine that can cause heart failure, caffeine from coffee and energy drinks, raw dried beans which contain lectins, raw rhubarb and raw green potatoes which contain oxalates and solanine, onions and garlic which can damage red blood cells, citrus fruits especially for male mice because d-limonene can cause kidney damage, alcohol, and very salty or sugary processed foods. Avocado in large amounts is also considered harmful. Sticky peanut butter in large globs can be a choking hazard for pet mice even though wild mice love it. For wild house mice, commercial poisons are used that contain anticoagulants like bromadiolone, brodifacoum, or cholecalciferol, which cause internal bleeding or calcium overdose over several days. These poisons are highly toxic to mice but also dangerous to pets, children, and wildlife if ingested, so they must be placed in tamper-resistant bait stations and ideally used by licensed professionals. Natural household items like plaster of Paris mixtures are not reliably toxic and are inhumane.
