Mice are most active indoors during the fall and winter months, particularly from October through January, when outdoor temperatures drop and food becomes scarce outside. This is when house mice seek warmth, shelter, and steady food inside homes, garages, and attics in large numbers. Within that period, October and November are often the peak months for new infestations because mice are actively scouting and moving in before the first hard freeze. However, mice are active year-round and do not hibernate, so if they have already established nests inside your home, you may see activity in any month including spring and summer, especially at night when they forage. In terms of daily activity, mice are nocturnal and most active between dusk and dawn, with peaks shortly after sunset. In warmer southern states where winters are mild, mice can be active indoors throughout the year without a strong seasonal peak. For outdoor wild mice, late summer is very active as they gather food for winter. If you want to prevent infestations, late summer to early fall, around August and September, is the best time to seal entry points and set preventive traps before the main migration indoors begins.
