When did they start using Romex in houses, Romex nonmetallic sheathed cable was introduced in 1922 by Rome Wire Company in Rome, New York, originally called Romex as brand name, and started being used in houses in 1920s as replacement for knob and tube wiring, gaining popularity after World War II. Early Romex had rubber insulation and cloth sheathing without ground wire, used in 1920s and 1930s, but widespread adoption began in 1950s and 1960s as housing boom demanded cheaper and faster wiring method than armored cable and conduit, with NM cable becoming dominant residential wiring method. In 1960s, ground wire added to Romex, making it NM with ground, and in 1984 NM-B with 90 degree rated conductors became standard. So they started using Romex in houses in 1922 when introduced, but common use began in 1930s to 1950s, with post war housing using Romex extensively because easier to install than knob and tube or BX, with 1960s houses almost all Romex, with knob and tube phased out by 1940s, with Romex becoming standard residential wiring by 1960s, with today Romex being most common house wiring in US, with history spanning 100 years from introduction in 1922 to modern NM-B used today.
