What happens if Romex gets wet, if Romex NM-B cable gets wet it can be damaged, become unsafe, and may need replacement, because Romex is not rated for wet locations, with paper filler inside that absorbs water and insulation that can degrade, with water causing corrosion of copper and ground wire, and potential short circuit and fire hazard if energized while wet. What happens is water can wick inside outer sheath through paper filler, staying trapped, causing copper conductors to corrode, insulation to degrade, and creating risk of short circuit and ground fault, with wet Romex losing its insulating properties, potentially causing breaker trips, arcing, and fire if powered while wet. If Romex gets wet from flood or leak, code requires it to be replaced if water entered sheath, as drying not sufficient to restore safety, with NEC prohibiting NM cable in wet locations, so wet Romex must be removed and replaced with dry cable, and not energized until replaced. Short term splash may be okay if dried quickly and not soaked, but prolonged wetness requires replacement. So what happens if Romex gets wet, it absorbs water, corrodes, degrades, becomes unsafe, can cause short circuits, and must be replaced if soaked, with prevention being to keep Romex dry and not use in wet locations, using UF cable or THWN in conduit for wet areas instead.
